Understanding the meaning of the monuments on Salisbury Plain

It's easy to forget that Stonehenge - impressive as it is - isn't the only monument on Salisbury Plain. It's part of a sacred landscape built over millennia, where each monument is given meaning by its relationship to the others.

This audio tour takes you from the stone circle to outlying cemeteries such as Normanton Downs barrows and Winterbourne Stoke barrows, as well as the Cursus - a huge straight earthwork - Woodhenge and Durrington Walls. You can walk, if you're fit, or drive between the sites.

We'll explain how the different types of burial monument - long barrows, disc barrows, bell barrows and bowl barrows - developed, and tell you about some of the finds made by archaeologists. We'll explain the complex archaeology of the area and some of the more recent theories about what these megalithic monuments really mean and how they are related to each other.

(This audio tour doesn't go into the stone circle itself, which is part of English Heritage and has an admission fee.)
