London's village podcasts have been brought to you by British Airways and Visit London. Helping you make the most of the greatest city in the world.
In this podcast Jim Davis takes you around Greenwich, playground of kings and queens and the home of time and space.
Greenwich has long been a favourite of kings and queens and it is easy to see why. With some of the most glorious parks in town and stupendous views - some barely changed since the 19th century - it hardly feels like London at all.
Greenwich is home to the Royal Observatory and the famous Meridian Line. At the observatory the presenter finds himself unexpectedly enthralled by its exhibition explaining how clocks, telescopes and Greenwich itself have shaped the world. He discovers why its famous clock does not always tell the correct time, how ravens forced the Royal observatory to move from the Tower of London to Greenwich and why Greenwich is a particular hit with visiting Chinese and Russian leaders.
He also explores the truly palatial Old Royal Naval College - designed by Sir Christopher Wren as London's answer to Versailles - and marvels at one of the UK's finest painted dining halls.
Jim Davis gets up to date with the exciting restoration plans for the famous Cutty Sark ship and discovers that there is still optimism about the project despite the tragic fire in May 2007.
Aside from Greenwich's well-known attractions, Jim explores the world's only fan museum, the church where King Henry VIII was christened and the largest and best-equipped contemporary dance school in Europe. Not to mention plenty of funky bars and restaurants and a superb market for arts and crafts and secondhand clothes and music. For a day out, Greenwich has more than enough to satisfy the most demanding visitor.
