York The Best of York Walk Talk Tours

EnglishFrenchGermanSpanish

Starting at St Helen's Square, beside the famous Betty's English tea shop, see the Mansion House before passing the Assembly Rooms and the Theatre Royal to reach the York Art Gallery and King's Manor. A stroll through the Museum Gardens takes in the Yorkshire Museum and 14th Century Hospitium, before crossing Lendal Bridge and descending steps to the Ouse riverside walk. Hear of Joseph Rowntree and his confectionery empire before reaching Ouse Bridge and York's historic dockside. A short detour takes in the Royal Opera House and York Dungeon before leaving the riverside to discover Clifford's Tower's gruesome history and the Castle Museum, where you hear the fate of legendary highwayman Dick Turpin. Passing Fairfax House, where you can experience life as it was lived in Georgian times, discover why the popular Jorvik Museum is in the middle of a modern shopping centre. Admire the ancient Merchant Adventurers' Hall and hear how they controlled York's 15th century cloth trade. See the city's shortest street and the charming Shambles, once a street of butcher's shops, now lined with trendy boutiques, cafes and gift shops. Here you'll discover what motivated Guy Fawkes to take part in the Gunpowder Plot. Moving on via King's Court to Goodramgate and the ancient Holy Trinity Church, now in the care of the churches conservation trust, which has retained so many of its original medieval features. No tour of York would be complete without a walk on the walls, and these are reached at Monk Bar at the top of Goodramgate, which also houses the Richard III Museum. Walking atop the perimeter wall of the original Roman fortress you will see the Minster Yard with its Treasurer's House before reaching Bootham Bar where you descend to High Petergate to finish the tour at the main entrance to the largest gothic cathedral in northern Europe, York Minster.
