Ireland Dublin Dalkey & Dun Laoghaire iWalk

English

Written and narrated by Pat Liddy

Discover Dalkey and Dun Laoghaire
Dalkey DART Station. The best way to arrive at the start of this walk is by the DART, the
local suburban rail network. It is, of course, also possible to arrive by public bus number 8
or by car and if you do the latter, join the walk from outside the railway station.
Savour the old-world ambiance that Dalkey has managed to preserve. It is now largely a Victorian
township that grew, with the coming of the railroad, into a dormitory suburb of Dublin.
However, its first inhabitants had settled here as far back as 8,000 years ago, and
Neolithic or Late Stone Age remains have been unearthed in the area. But it was as
Dublinís chief port in medieval times that the then walled town achieved its fame and
fortune. Up to the building of proper port facilities in the 17th century, Dublin relied on
the deep-water harbour at Dalkey for the handling of larger ships.
