Australia Sydney Centennial Park Walking Tours

Centennial Park has had an interesting and complex social history since its inception in 1888. From the villas on its periphery, to the swamps at its heart, there are fascinating stories of changing social attitudes to leisure. Sir Henry Parkes considered the park to be a place of passive recreation for the upper classes, and it seems incredible today that the sport of bicycle riding was prohibited.

It was an offence to climb trees, lie on seats, walk on any grass, engage in any game, or have a picnic. Things have certainly changed, and there was a ferocious battle in the 1970's to save the park from destruction by developers.

The walk begins and ends at the Centennial Park Café on Parkes Drive
