Though Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a Scottish architect, designer and artist, is hailed for spearheading the art deco movement, he had little success in his lifetime. Mackintosh, along with the rest of his comrades, known as "the four" and including his wife, Margaret Macdonald, are held largely responsible for the Glaswegian style. Drawing on the English arts and crafts movement, Mackintosh set the stage in Glasgow for art noveau.
